Thursday, June 7 at 7:00am at 61 Main - First Thursday meeting with Larry Wilson of Southern Appalachian Folk School as speaker, plus the winners of the Von Hinton Citizenship Award will be honored

Friday, June 15 4:00pm - 7:00pm - Retirement party for our member Margy Lohman at Madeline's - RSVP to 706-253-6488

Thursday, June 21, at 7:00am at 61 Main - Third Thursday meeting with a Joy House Graduate Testimony as the program

Saturday, June 30 - Flapjack Run in downtown Jasper - need many volunteers - more to come...

Optimist Club of Jasper members,

This week is a VERY active week in the lives of our Optimist Club.  Please try to make some of these activities, all of them, or at least one!

Tuesday, May 15 - 11:00am - Pickens County Middle School Legion of Character - check in at front office and then come and support these outstanding students that have achieved recognition for great character.

Wednesday, May 16 - 11:00am - Jasper Middle School Legion of Character - same as above

Thursday, May 17 - 7:00am - third Thursday meeting at 61 Main - program is Respect for Law - come and help celebrate our local law enforcement and show them your support and appreciation

Friday, May 18 - 3:00pm - Jasper Middle School - celebration of the fine job that the JOI (Junior Optimist Club) has accomplished this year - refreshments will be served to the kids

STARs RU Ready?

Dr. Kina S. Mallard to be the Guest Speaker at the 2018 STAR Banquet

The Optimist Club of Jasper announces the guest speaker of the 2018 STAR Banquet will be Dr. Kina S. Mallard.  Mallard is the 20th president of Reinhardt University in Waleska, Ga. She came to Reinhardt from Carson-Newman University, Jefferson City, Tenn., where she had served in senior leadership positions since 2009. Previously, she also held academic leadership posts at Gordon College, Wenham, Mass., and Union University, Jackson, Tenn. 

Mallard has a Doctorate of Philosophy in Communication and a Master of Arts in Organizational Communication from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tenn. Her Bachelor of Science in Speech and Theatre is from Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro, Tennessee and she enjoys sharing how her theatre degree has helped her be a successful leader in higher education. Dr. Mallard’s published works explore academic leadership, communication, private Christian higher education and finding joy in one’s work. 

Mallard is a leader in higher education serving on the Board of Trustees, Georgia Delegation, of the Southern Association of Colleges Commission on Colleges, Chair of the Georgia Independent College Association Board of Directors, the Appalachian Athletic Conference and Mid-South Athletic Conferences Council of Presidents, and on the Board of the National Association of Schools and Colleges of the United Methodist Church. 

Mallard is also very active in the community serving on the Board of Directors for the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce, the Cherokee County Community Board of Directors for United Community Bank, Chair of the Cherokee County Public Library Board and Chair of the Sequoyah Regional Library System Regional Board, and member of the Renew Ed SPLOST for Cherokee’s Schools Committee. 

Mallard is married to Steve Dietz, director of business development for Food Donation Connection. Together they have five children, three of whom are married, and two grandchildren, Adeline Dietz and Estelle Louise (Stella Lou) Faulkner.
For over 25 years the Optimists have recognized the PHS STAR Student and Teacher along with nine STAR Finalists with the largest and most unique local STAR Banquet in this statewide program.  In the local program, the Optimists not only recognize the STAR 
Student and Teacher, but an additional nine STAR Student and Teacher Finalists.

The Optimist Club of Jasper will recognize the 2018 STAR Finalists and their selected teachers along with the 2018 STAR Student, at the annual STAR Banquet on Tuesday evening, March 6, 2018.  The banquet will be held at 7:00 p.m. at Chattahoochee Technical College, 100 Campus Drive, Jasper, Georgia.  Anyone interested in attending the banquet should email the Optimist Club at pickensstar@etcmail.com  Reservations are required and tickets are $25.00 per person.  The Woodbridge Inn, who has catered the Optimist STAR program since the first banquet, will again cater this year’s banquet.
