The Glass continues to fill = Optimist Club Growing

The Optimist Club of Jasper met on Thursday, September 6 at Last Catch Seafood Restaurant and grew their membership that day by inducting our newest member, Judge Brenda Weaver.  Her optimistic outlook on life makes her a great addition to our club.  In addition, two new Friends of Optimists were welcomed to the club:  Jim and Kim Ryan, owners of Last Catch.  They have opened their doors to our club with a bountiful breakfast twice a month for the past several years and their willingness to get up early to serve us has been greatly appreciated by all.  In addition, another Friend of Optimists was present:  Brad White.

The program for the meeting was provided by an enthusiastic presenter, Olivia Hattan-Edwards, Children’s Coordinator at Pickens County Library.  She provided an overview with slide presentation of the entire summer reading program and events that were held this year the library.  Between May 18 and July 31, the Pickens County Library held 34 programs for youth.  A total of 11,175 children/youth books were checked out during this 10.5 weeks of the Summer Reading Club.  These programs are supported financially by the Optimist Club of Jasper.

OPTIMIST CLUB MAKES DONATIONS

The mission of Optimist International is “bringing out the best in kids”.  The Optimist Club of Jasper supports this mission each year by making donations to organizations that serve our local youth.  At their meeting on August 16, five Pickens County groups were recognized for their work in our community and given a check to continue their good work.

These five organizations are The Joy House, Pickens County Library/Youth Programs, CARES, North Georgia Boys and Girls Clubs as well as the Youth Enrichment Programs for Pickens County middle schools.  Each of the representatives of these organizations gave a brief overview of how the money is used to meet their missions.
