6/18/2013 ~ by Sue Appleton - Each year the Optimist Club of Jasper awards a scholarship to a Pickens High School senior who exhibits outstanding citizenship at school and in the community. This year the PHS teachers chose Amanda Rogers to receive this award based on the criteria outlined by the Optimist Club of Jasper.

Terri Semig, counselor at PHS wrote: “Amanda has a wonderfully optimistic attitude – always!! She does community projects all over the place and I am not exaggerating. The type of projects that bring smiles to people’s faces. She is a great student!”

Amanda attended the club meeting on June 6th to deliver her thanks to the club members and to receive their recognition. Amanda will be attending North Georgia College and State University starting in August.

Also at this meeting, the club made a donation to the PHS BETA Club for their support and assistance at our annual STAR Student and Teacher Banquet held in February. Christine Westbrook, BETA Club advisor, attended the meeting to accept the check.

The Optimist Club of Jasper held their annual Optimist Scholarship Golf Tournament on June 12 at Bent Tree. The money raised at this tournament is used to fund the 10 STAR scholarships as well as the annual Citizenship Award scholarship. Thanks to all the teams who participated as well as our many tee sign sponsors and the companies who donated products for this event.
