2014 PHS S.T.A.R. Student and Finalists!

Kaleigh Watters, a high school senior, has been named the 2014 STAR Student of Pickens High School. The announcement is made by the Optimist Club of Jasper, local sponsor for the Pickens STAR Program. Watters, daughter of Chris and Sue Watters of Jasper, selected Mrs. Susan Anderson as her STAR Teacher. The PAGE Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program, now in its 56th year, is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of Education. Since its inception, the STAR Program has honored more than 24,000 students and the teachers they have selected as having the most influence on their academic success. To obtain the STAR nomination, high school seniors must have the highest score on a single test date on the three part SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average. Miss Watters plans to attend the Georgia Tech and major in business. Miss Watters states that she selected Mrs. Anderson as her STAR Teacher because – “even though she taught me in the third grade and throughout elementary school, what I learned from her has continued to impact me nearly a decade later. She believed whole-heartedly that I could succeed and placed a personal interest in me, both in and out of the classroom. To this day I can still remember the word puzzles she gave us, her daughters’ prom dresses that were offered for future use, and going to her house for end of the year parties”. Mrs. Anderson has taught for 32 years and she currently teaches at Harmony Elementary School. Mrs. Anderson states that “I was fortunate to have Kaleigh in my elementary classroom for several years and I would describe her as a beautiful girl with a contagious smile and love for learning”.

Full of JOOI in Jasper!

The Optimist Club of Jasper welcomed our two Junior Optimists Clubs to a meeting on January 2, 2014 when school was not in session. Over 30 Junior Optimists with their families plus the school advisors joined the club for breakfast and to meet the Optimists members. Bruce Godfrey introduced Darlene Fowler, JMS Advisor, and Kim Hamilton, Assistant JMS Advisor, who announced that the JOOI club at Jasper Middle School is growing. They took the leadership role at JMS of the canned food drive for CARES just before the holiday break. Their next activity will be to collect coats for Project Overcoat in January. Larry Starr then announced that our newest Junior Optimist Club was chartered December 30, 2013 at Pickens County Middle School with John Jensen as the Advisor. John introduced the officers of the new JOOI club and noted that they will be determining their club activities soon. Participation in JOOI gives young people the opportunity to serve their communities. Kids who are involved in JOOI clubs learn about, and practice good citizenship, teamwork and communication. Membership in JOOI Clubs helps to develop friendship with others who share the same interests. There are opportunities for personal growth and leadership positions. JOOI exposes members to Optimism as a philosophy of life, provides members with an improved sense of kindness, and increased awareness for those in need. JOOI serves as an excellent training ground for future community leaders. The Optimist Club of Jasper is proud of both the Jasper Middle School Junior Optimist Club that has been a club for a number of years and now our newest Junior Optimist Club at Pickens County Middle School. Working with these two clubs gives us the opportunity to “bring out the best in kids” in our community.
