SUSAN WHITE INDUCTED INTO GEORGIA OPTIMIST HALL OF FAME

Susan White who has been a member of Optimist International and the Optimist Club of Jasper since 1998 was inducted into the Georgia District Hall of Fame at the recent conference held in Athens, GA.  Susan was Optimist Club of Jasper President in 2001-2002 when the club was recognized as both an Honor and Distinguished club.  At the Georgia District level, she was the Lt. Governor of Zone 4 in 2003-2004 receiving the recognition of both Honor and Distinguished Zone.

Susan White continued her service to the OI Georgia District by being Secretary/Treasurer in 2006-2007 and once again in 2010-2011 and 2011 and 2012. 
Susan reached the highest level of leadership of the Georgia District by holding the office of Governor Elect in 2007-2008 and then as Georgia Governor in 2008-2009.  She has remained active in the OI Georgia District by chairing various committees as well.

Currently at the local level, Susan White is the Chair for the Oratorical Contest for the Optimist Club of Jasper which will hold its competition on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at the Pickens County Public Library at 10:00 AM.

The Optimist Club of Jasper was honored to nominate Susan White for induction into the Georgia District Hall of Fame. We are proud that her dedication and willingness to move forward the OI mission of “bringing out the best in kids” was recognized at the highest levels.  Congratulations, Susan White!

Optimist Threepeat at the PHS Basketball Concessions!

For the third time this season, Optimist Club of Jasper Volunteers kept the concessions running smoothly for the PHS Dragons and 'Nettes Varsity squads! Many thank to Concession Captain Paul Ray for organizing the squad. Sue 'Cracker Jack' Appleton was also on the squad and served as the photographer!

Meet the STAR Speaker!

Paul Starr to be the Guest Speaker for the 2014 STAR Banquet

Paul Pitchford Starr, a 1996 PHS Graduate and a STAR Finalist that year, will be the guest speaker for the 2014 STAR Banquet.  The banquet will be held at Chattahoochee Technical College on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 7:00 pm. 
Paul is a native of Pickens County and is the son of Larry and Barbara Starr of Jasper.  He is a Construction Manager for AMEC Construction and currently manages their maintenance outage services / small capital projects division.  AMEC designs, delivers and maintains strategic and complex assets and employs over 29,000 people in 40 countries worldwide with annual revenues in excess of £4.0 billion.
Paul started his career with Kamtech, Inc in 2001, which was later purchased by AMEC.  He has been involved in hundreds of industrial construction projects all around the United States ranging from coal and gas fired power plants to pulp & paper plants to PV solar installations.
Starting as a mechanical estimator, he has worked through the levels of field engineer, project engineer, project manager and currently manages a division completing approximately 30 projects per year with annual revenues of $30M.
Paul graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2001 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.   He graduated with the co-op seal, was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a founding member of GT Off-Road Motorsports.
Paul lives in Canton with his wife Heather, daughter Haley and son James.  He enjoys spending time with his family, working on his farm and hiking.

Optimist STAR Banquet scheduled for February 27th!


The 2014 STAR Banquet is set for Thursday evening, February 27th at Chattahoochee Technical College. The Optimist Club of Jasper is the local sponsor of the STAR Program. Kaleigh Watters has been named the 2014 STAR Student of Pickens High School and she selected Susan Anderson as her STAR Teacher.

The PAGE STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) Program begins each year in participating high schools throughout Georgia when the STAR Student is named and chooses a STAR Teacher to share in this recognition. The students and teachers are honored by their schools and receive recognition in their communities from one of the more than 165 statewide civic organizations and businesses that serve as local sponsors for the STAR Program.

For over 25 years, the Optimist Club of Jasper has been the local sponsor of the STAR Program in Pickens County. The local program under the Optimist sponsorship is the largest and most unique STAR Programs in this statewide event. The Optimist not only recognizes the STAR Student and Teacher, but another 9 STAR Student and Teacher Finalist. These ten Pickens High School seniors have achieved the highest point scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test, known as the “SAT” and are in the top 10 percent of the senior class. Each of the students in turn chose a teacher that has contributed the most to their achievements and academic success.

The Optimist Club of Jasper will host the annual STAR Banquet on Thursday evening, February 27, 2014. The banquet will be held at 7:00 p.m. at Chattahoochee College, 100 Campus Drive, Jasper, Georgia. The Woodbridge Inn has catered this program since the Optimist Club started this unique program and will again this year.
