2014 STAR Banquet Recognizes STAR Students and Teachers

The 2014 STAR Banquet was held Thursday evening, February 27th at Chattahoochee Technical College.  The Optimist Club of Jasper is the local sponsor of the STAR Program.  Kaleigh Watters was recognized as the 2014 STAR Student of Pickens High School along with her STAR Teacher, Mrs. Susan Anderson.  Kaleigh is the daughter of Chris and Sue Watters of Jasper.

The Optimist Club of Jasper has been the local sponsor of the STAR Program since the 1980’s, but has conducted a unique STAR Program since 1992.  The Optimist’s STAR Program not only recognizes the STAR Student, but an additional nine STAR Student and Teacher Finalists.  To obtain the STAR nomination, high school seniors must have the highest score on a single test date on the three-part SAT and be in the top 10 percent of their class based on grade point average.  The same criteria are used for the STAR Student Finalists.

The Star Finalists Students and Teacher recognized at the banquet this year were:

Paul Starr, a 1996 PHS graduate and STAR Finalist that year, was the guest speaker for this year’s banquet.  Paul is the son of Larry and Barbara Star of Jasper.  Paul spoke to the STAR Students and Teachers about setting goals – SMART Goals – Specific, Measureable, Attitude (the importance of a good attitude), Realistic, and you must establish a Time-Line to obtain the goals.  The speech was not only applicable to the students, but to all the people in attendance.

Approximately 100 people attended this year’s banquet including the PAGE State STAR Coordinator Lee Raudonis, School Superintendent Lula Mae Perry, all 5 School Board Members, local Judges John Worchester and Roger Bradley, representatives from ETC, Chattahoochee College,  and the Pickens County Chamber of Commerce.  Also attending were PHS Principal Eddie McDonald and assistant Principal Harold Culbreth along with Terri Semig and Joey Sullivan from the PHS Counselors’ Department.

The Optimist Club would like to express appreciation to Chattahoochee College, The Woodbridge Inn, Royston LLC, Patsy Schmidt – Calligraphy on the Certificates, and a special thanks to the PHS Beta Club that provided students to prepare, serve, and clean-up the night of the banquet.

Kaleigh and Mrs. Anderson will represent PHS at the Region 2 STAR Banquet that will be held on Tuesday evening March 18, 2014 at 7:00 pm.  The Region 2 Banquet will be held at Walker Hall of the First Baptist Church of Jasper.  Judge Brenda Weaver is the Chairperson for the Region 2 STAR Program.
