The happiest nut in town!

By Sue Appleton/Pecan Committee

Each year the Optimist Club of Jasper sells FRESH pecans straight from the Georgia pecan groves during November and December.  We guarantee that they are this year’s crop. These pecans are perfect for your Thanksgiving baking as well as Christmas giving.   Each 12 oz. bag sells for $8.00.  They are to be delivered to us the first week of November to ensure that they are fresh from the trees!

The mission of the Optimists is “to being out the best in kids” and the funds raised are distributed  in Pickens County to help the North Georgia Boys and Girls Clubs, the children’s programs at Pickens County Library, the Joy House, CARES, Pickens Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy, Prevent Child Abuse Pickens, Weekend Snack Program in the schools, the Hope House, ACES and more!  Other programs supported by this fundraiser include our annual Oratorical Contest, our annual Essay Contest and our annual Respect for the Law breakfast.  Each year the Optimist Club of Jasper also holds the STAR Banquet that recognizes the top high school seniors and their STAR teachers.

Where can you find these delicious pecans and help Pickens County kids?  You can purchase them at Garner Ace Hardware, Marble Hill Ace Hardware, United Community Bank, Bank of North Georgia, both Renasant Banks, both Community Banks of Pickens County, Shaw Supply, R and R Trikes, Falcon Physical Therapy, and more.  Also, all of our club members will have them available!   Cash or checks made out to Optimist Club of Jasper.

If you wish to order 1/2 case (16 bags) or an entire case (32 bags) contact Sue Appleton at jsappleton@windstream.net or 706-692-9755 and we will get them delivered to you.

Tax deductible donation? Yes we can!

The Optimist Club of Jasper is actually two different organizations under the Internal Revenue Code. The Optimist Club is a fraternal organization under Section 501 (c) (4), which is tax-free, but contributions to which are not tax-deductible. The Optimist Club of Jasper Foundation, Inc. is a charitable corporation under Section 501 (c) (3) that operates our charitable programs, and is eligible to receive charitable contributions.
The Optimist Club has operated as a fraternal organization in Jasper for over 30 years.  By the mid-2000’s, the Internal Revenue Service had adopted a policy that fraternal organizations could not receive tax-free contributions because of their non-charitable activities. To better serve our community, in 2014, the Optimist Club decided to establish a foundation to operate our charitable programs, and be eligible to receive contributions under Section 501 (c) (3). We applied for 501(c)(3) status in 2013, and received a determination letter in October, 2014 confirming that contributions to the Optimist Club of Jasper Foundation, Inc. are fully tax-deductible. Special thanks to Paul Ray for spear heading the effort on behalf of the club!

The 2014-2015 Foundation Board and Officers are:

Chairman - Tom DiPuma

  Vice Chair – Bruce Godfrey

Secretary – David Slade

Treasurer – Bob Lewis

First Meeting of the New Club Year!

The Optimist Club of Jasper held their inaugural meeting of their new club year on Thursday, October 2 at Last Catch Seafood Restaurant starting with a delicious breakfast. Larry Starr, club president for 2014-2015 started the meeting with a donation to our JOOI Club at Jasper Middle School. A check was presented by Bruce Godfrey to the club advisors, Darlene Fowler and Kim Hamilton.
After breakfast the program was presented by Bob Anderson of the local Friendship Force. He provided information about the purpose of Friendship Force and how the local group travels to other locations and also hosts people from other countries.
The Mission of the Optimist Club is "bringing out the best in kids". Wouldn't you like to be part of the this group? If so, visit us at an upcoming meeting at Last Catch at 7:00 AM on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month. Great programs; great people; great food and more!
