Mountain Education Center opened in 1993 and Pickens joined the system in 1994 and sent students to the Gilmer County campus. In 2007 Mountain Education Center High School became a Charter School and in 2012 the system was re-named Mountain Education Charter High School. The Pickens campus was opened in 2010. The mission of MECHS “is to provide students the opportunity to be successful learners and to earn a high school diploma”. MECHS has 12 campuses across North Georgia.
